A Monastic Community within the Anglican Church of Canada
WHO ARE WE?
The Sisterhood of St. John the Divine is a contemporary expression of the religious life for women within the Anglican Church of Canada. Founded in 1884, we are a prayer and gospel-centred monastic community bound together by the call to live out our baptismal covenant. Nurtured by our founding vision of prayer, community, and ministry we are open and responsive to the needs of the church and the contemporary world, continually seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit in our life and ministry.
Called to be a sign of Christ, the Sisterhood witnesses to the power of Christ’s reconciling and forgiving love through the gospel imperatives of prayer, spiritual guidance, justice, peace, care for creation, hospitality, ministering to those in need, promoting unity, healing and wholeness.
WHAT DO WE DO?
The Sisters’ ministry of prayer and presence includes:
- intercessory prayer for the Diocese
- visiting and praying with congregations throughout the Diocese
- speaking about the Religious Life and providing opportunities for others to share in our life-style
- leading retreats, quiet days, and workshops; and preaching

- participation on committees, leadership teams and as resource persons for Diocesan and Parish events
- as time and opportunities allow, outreach to other western dioceses.

The Sisters in the Diocese of British Columbia also provide support to our Associates in BC and Alberta.
WHERE ARE WE?
The home base for our Sisters ministry in the diocese of British Columbia [website »] is at St. John’s House, BC on St. Peter’s Road, Victoria. The house is the rectory of St. Peter’s Lakehill Anglican Church [website »], and is on the same property as the Church. Near one of the main intersections in Victoria, McKenzie and Quadra, it is located on a main bus route, and with easy access to both the airport, BC ferries, and downtown: See Google map here »
The Sisters extend a warm welcome to individuals and groups to come and share with them in their life and prayer. There are regular services of morning and evening prayer, Eucharist and compline in our chapel. Please call St John’s House for the times of these services.
HOW ARE WE SUPPORTED?
The Sisters’ ministry in the Diocese of British Columbia is supported in part by the Diocese who provide our accommodation and a contribution toward our food; in part through the honoraria that the Sisters receive from the mission work that they do within the Diocese; and in major part from the financial support received from Parishes, our Associates and Oblates, individuals, friends, and organizations who value the religious life within the church.
The Sisterhood of St. John the Divine is a registered charity. Our charitable donation number is BN 11925 4266 RR0001. See about donating to the SSJD here »
